Survival Trip is a go for tomorrow!
Please take a moment to read over the trip expectations below, and discuss them with your child.
Today in class we also had a discussion about respect. I asked to students to reflect on whether they were doing their best to be a positive, respectful member of the classroom community. In what ways do we each contribute positively? What could we each improve on to make for an even better SASE experience? I feel that this would be a valuable discussion to have at home as well! Please feel free to email me if you have any specific comments or questions.

For a safe and authentic experience, a few of the expectations we have discussed as a class include: (*It would be great if you could review these with your child so that we are all on the same page*
- Absolutely no wandering/visiting other groups
- no yelling to try to get the attention of the other groups.
- Phones MUST remain on airplane mode from the moment we leave the school, to the moment we return to the school (Students will be video-documenting their experience. If they have an alternative recording device to their phone, I highly recommend they bring that and leave their phone safely locked up at school!)
- no music/electronic games....this is a survival night!
I encourage each student to challenge him/herself, within their level of comfort and ability. Possible challenges to simulate a true survival experience include:
- trying to light the fire with flint and steel and/or only natural fire-starters
- trying to build the survival shelter using only natural materials (or limit your use of man-made materials such as tarp, rope, etc)
-heating water/snow in the SASE kit can over the fire for a hot drink/soup
- sleeping without a sleeping mat and/or sleeping bag (*they will keep it next to them in case!)
-sleeping with an emergency blanket instead of a sleeping bag
Feel free to email me tonight if you have any last-minute questions!
